US Primaries Advance in Maine, South Carolina, Nevada, North Dakota

(MENAFN) Several key US states held primary elections on Tuesday, producing nominees in Senate, gubernatorial, and congressional races as voters cast ballots across Maine, South Carolina, Nevada, and North Dakota.

In Maine, Graham Platner secured the Democratic nomination for the US Senate, setting up a November matchup against Republican Senator Susan Collins. According to reports, Platner received about 72% of the vote after Governor Janet Mills withdrew from the race earlier in April, although her name remained on the ballot and she still received roughly 19.6%. Collins ran unopposed in the Republican primary.

Maine’s gubernatorial contests remained undecided, with multiple candidates closely positioned in both parties. The state uses ranked-choice voting, meaning ballots are redistributed until a candidate achieves a majority, and results had not yet been finalized.

In South Carolina, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham won renomination with 56.8% of the vote and will face Democratic challenger Annie Andrews in November. The Republican race for governor moved to a runoff between Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette and Attorney General Alan Wilson after no candidate reached a majority.

Representative Jim Clyburn secured the Democratic nomination in South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District. Meanwhile, the race to replace outgoing Representative Nancy Mace in the 1st District advanced to runoffs in both parties.

In Nevada, Governor Joe Lombardo won the Republican nomination, while Attorney General Aaron Ford secured the Democratic nomination for governor. Several congressional contests in the state remained unresolved, including the Republican primary for the open Second District seat.

In North Dakota, Republican Representative Julie Fedorchak won renomination in the state’s only US House district and will face Democratic challenger Trygve Hammer in the general election.

According to reports, the primaries across the four states set the stage for closely watched general elections in November.
