Background

The Maine State Library and Lithgow Public Library invite the public to an evening with University of Maine historian Liam Riordan on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at the Maine State Cultural Building, 230 State Street in Augusta.

Riordan's illustrated lecture, "What Should We Remember about the Declaration of Independence in 2026?" will explore how the Declaration was created, what it meant in 1776, and its meaning today as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. Attendees are encouraged to bring questions and join the discussion.

A reception will take place in the Maine Cultural Building Atrium from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by the lecture in the Library from 6 to 7 p.m. The evening event is free, but registration is required.

Accessibility: Elevators will not be available for this event. Visitors with mobility or accessibility needs should enter the Library through entrance D4, located in the lower State Street parking lot.

Earlier that day, visitors can view Maine Historical Society's copy of the Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration of Independence at the Cultural Building. Printed in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, it is one of 26 surviving copies.

Exhibit tours are offered at 30-minute intervals from noon to 5 p.m. Walk-in registrations are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. Viewing the Declaration requires separate registration from the evening program.
